About Laikipia

Affordable Kenya Safari Tours, Beach Vacations, DIY travel, Tips for bespoke Holidays & Beyond.

Laikipia, known for its traditional ranches and rolling farmland, offers a unique and interesting addition to a Kenyan safari circuit. While wildlife may not be as abundant as in the Mara, Laikipia is home to almost half of Kenya’s black rhino population, over 2,000 migrating elephants, increasing numbers of wild dogs, and the beautiful Grevy’s Zebra.

Many of the former livestock ranches in the area have been converted into luxurious safari lodges, where travelers can engage in immersive experiences such as horseback riding, hiking with local Maasai, and learning about conservation efforts. The atmosphere is laid-back, and activities revolve around the guest’s preferences.

Laikipia is vast and has three main airstrips, including Lewa Downs, Nanyuki, and Loisaba. Many lodges are within an hour’s drive from these airstrips. Borana Lodge and Lewa Conservancy, both known for their contributions to rhino conservation, are popular choices for accommodations. Ol Pejeta, a 90,000-acre conservancy, is home to sanctuaries for chimpanzees and rhinos. The Rhino Sanctuary is essential for East Africa’s rhino population, and Ol Pejeta offers a variety of traditional safari activities and conservation visits.

Ol Lentille, based on the community-owned Kijabe Group Ranch, offers exceptional beauty and remoteness. The Ol Lentille Conservancy covers 24,000 acres of grassy hills, deep valleys, and heavily wooded areas. Travelers can spot African wild dogs, Grevy’s zebra, greater kudu, leopard, hyena, elephant, Burchell’s zebra, and klipspringer while staying in one of the Sanctuary’s few private villas. Additionally, guests can visit community projects such as schools and clinics supported by Ol Lentille.

Laikipia is an excellent first-stop on a Kenyan safari with its diverse wildlife and luxurious accommodations. Travelers can access Ol Pejeta through a flight to Nanyuki and a road transfer or a private vehicle and guide from Nairobi. Many guests opt for the flight to maximize their time and continue their journey north to Samburu or head to the Mara or the coast.
