Samburu Game Reserve is situated in the hot and arid fringes of Kenya’s vast Northern Frontier District. The area is home to the Samburu tribe, pastoral relatives of the Maasai. Samburu Reserve, as a safari destination, has a rugged and dramatic landscape; the Owasso Nyiro River runs along the southern boundary dividing Samburu Game Reserve and is home to crocodile and hippo, with many animals visiting to drink during the heat of the day. Samburu safari may offer sightings of buffalo, lion, leopard, cheetah, and other plains game. Species of game unique to the Samburu Game Reserve include the beisa oryx, the long-necked Gerenuk, Grevy’s zebra, reticulated giraffe, and the blue-shanked Somali ostrich.
We will pick you up at your Nairobi hotel by 6 AM and drive to Samburu National Reserve. The road takes us along the Kenyan Northern Frontier District.
Wild and rugged, Samburu is fiercely beautiful with its arid savannahs watered by the lovely river Ewaso Ng'iro. It is also one of Kenya’s most protected areas and home to species only found north of the equator, from the reticulated giraffes, Grevy’s zebras, Beisa oryx, gerenuk gazelles, and greater and lesser kudus. You will arrive in time for lunch and check in at the selected lodge, some needed relaxation time, then you proceed with the first evening thrilling game drive at the reserv,e then drive back to your lodge for dinner and overnight stay.
A hearty breakfast will give you a good start to this day, fully dedicated to the beauty, marvels, and roughness and toughness of Samburu. You will clearly see the difference in the day’s course - different animals, activities, and different dynamics among them - something you must see to understand. Lunch will jump in somewhere in the middle of the day, and a delicious dinner at your lodge will make the day a perfect one. Dinner and overnight at Samburu.
[NB: The best way to do game drives in Samburu is to leave with packed breaks at 6:30 AM and have the game drive until 11:00 AM. As the sun gets too hot, return to the lodge for rest and a dive in the pool. Have lunch, then head out for an afternoon game drive from 3:30 – 6:00 PM]
After a relaxed breakfast at the camp/lodge, we shall check out, followed by an onward departure back to Nairobi by road, with an optional lunch on the way. (At your own expense). Arrive in Nairobi by early afternoon [typically by 2.30 pm]. Drop off at your hotel or free onward transfer to the airport for your flight home.
